Customs: Revenue grew by 27% in February

Maldives Customs revealed that its revenue grew by 27 percent for the month of February.

In February 2022, the total revenue generated was MVR 325 million, compared to the MVR 256 million earned in February 2021.

According to the monthly statistics published by Customs, goods worth MVR 309 million was exported from Maldives in February. This is a 29 percent increment when compared to the same period last year. In 2021, goods worth only MVR 239 were exported.

It is also an increment when compared to the goods of MVR 312 million exported in January of this year.

In February, tuna was the most comment item to be exported, with MVR 149 million in frozen skipjack or stripe-bellied bonito going out from Maldives. Other tuna products exported include MVR 25 million in skipjack tuna (prepared, preserved), MVR 17 million in yellowfin tuna (canned, prepared and preserved), MVR 15 million in yellowfin tuna chunks (fresh or chilled) and MVR 10 million in yellowfin tuna loins (fresh or chilled).

Customs revealed that Thailand topped the list of major exporting countries with 56 percent of the total going to that country.

UK – 7 percent

Germany – 7 percent

India – 6 percent

France – 3 percent

Meanwhile, Customs’ data also showed that in the same period, imports grew by 39 percent, compared to February last year. A total of goods worth MVR 3.8 billion were imported in this period, while only goods worth MVR 2.7 billion was brought in last year during February.

Moreover, this is an increase when compared to January as well. In that month, only MVR 2.8 billion in goods were imported.

Oman and UAE led at the top of the list of major importing countries, with both nations making up 16 percent of imports each. 

Notably, the highest amount of fuel including marine gas oil, (diesel), petrol and aviation gas were imported from these two countries. A total of fuel worth MVR 863 billion was imported in February.

Singapore – 8 percent

Some of the other imports include food (MVR 783 million), machinery and mechanical appliances: electrical (MVR 607 million), products of chemical or allied industries (MVR 217 million), base metals and articles of base metals (MVR 219 million), vessels, aircraft and parts thereof (MVR 100 million), plastic and articles thereof: rubber and article (MVR 121 million), tobacco, alcohol and pork (41 million) and more.
