Tree Top Hospital performs two ophthalmologic surgeries for the first time in Maldives

Tree Top Hospital has performed successfully performed two ophthalmologic surgeries – Epiretinal Membrane Peeling and Silicone Oil Removal – for the first time in Maldives.

The surgeries were undergone by 50-year-old Samsadha Abbas, who was experiencing vision impairment caused by diabetes.

Sharing her experience, Samsadha noted a long history of eye pain and difficulty due to having to travel abroad for treatment. Having previously done Epiretinal Membrane Peeling and Silicone Oil Removal surgeries in India, Samsadha expressed joy over the convenience of not having to travel abroad to get the surgery and being able to stay close to her family to get the treatment she requires.

“After my second surgery the pain in my eye became unbearable, the opportunity to do this surgery in Male’ was extremely comforting,” she had said.

Therefore, Samsadha expressed gratitude to the Tree Top Hospital Ophthalmology Team. She said she is looking forward to her recovery journey at the hospital.

Epiretinal Membrane Peeling is performed as the epiretinal membrane causes blurring of vision in the eye. Silicone Oil Removal is performed because silicone oil increases the eye pressure and causes severe pain in the eye for the patient.

The surgical team was led by Consultant Ophthalmologists Dr. Parag Apte and Dr. Aditiya Rege, who were assisted by a skilled set of nurses.

Dr. Parag Apte specializes in Vitreoretinal Surgery with special clinical interests in Retinal Surgery, Phacoemulsification, Retinal Lasers, Intravitreal Injections, ROP Lasers, and Medical Retina for conditions including Diabetic Retinopathy, Age-Related Macular Degeneration and, Vascular Disorders of Retina. He earned his M.S. In Ophthalmology at Government Medical College Nagpur, India, and completed his Fellowship in Vitreo-Retina from Sankara Nethralaya, India. He boasts over 17 years of experience and is highly skilled in all areas of Vitreoretinal Surgery.

Dr. Aditiya Rege is specialized in Phacoemulsification, Diabetic Retinopathy Screening, Pterygium Surgery, Medical Glaucoma Management and Surgical Management of Complicated Cataract Cases. He completed his MS Ophthalmology at Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University Medical College, India and, MBBS from Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University Medical College, India. Dr. Aditya completed his Fellowship in General Ophthalmology from H.V. Desai Eye Hospital, India. He is experienced and skilled in diagnosing a wide range of Ophthalmology conditions.
