Imam arrested over sexual abuse allegations

Maldives Police Service has arrested a imam in a nothern island in Maldives over sexually abusing a step child. 

A media official for Police stated to Sun that they first recived resports of sexually abusing a 12-year-old on February 26.

The official added that a 38-year-old Maldivian male was arrested in connection to the case on Friday afternoon. 

The Police did not reveal any further information in relation to the case. 

Speaking to Sun, an official from the islands said that due to his post many islanders were shocked and found it hard to believe. However, the assesments conducted by both Police and Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services found enough evidence to support that the child was abused.

The official further revealed that the man in question remains married to the mother of the chid who he abused. 

The case in currently under further investigation by the Police.
