MPs arrested with alcohol, drugs: Police

The Police have said that in addition to alcohol, drugs were also found with the people arrested last night from Hdh. Hondaidhoo, an island leased for resort development.

Among those arrested are Kaashidhoo MP Abdullah Jabir, Henveiru-dhekunu MP Hamid Abdul Gafoor, former President Mohamed Nasheed’s Special Envoy Ibrahim Hussain Zaki and former Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair.

Police Media Official Hassan Haneef said today that ten people were arrested in Hdh. Hondaidhoo last night, including some ‘high-profile’ persons and foreign nationals.

“In addition to alcohol, a substance suspected to be hash oil was also found at the scene of the crime. We are currently testing the substances,” Haneef said.

Hdh. Hondaidhoo was previously inhabited. The island’s people were moved to Hdh. Hanimaadhoo in 1997 under the government's population centralisation policy. The island was leased to Abdullah Jabir's Yacht Tours for 21 years in 2003, for resort development.
