Large amounts of oil have been spilled into the lagoon on the north-east side of Male', leaving
the water in the area contaminated.
The oil, which started from the lagoon on the Foreign Ministry building area, has now spread into the sea.
Deputy Director of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Mohamed Ibrahim said that the they were informed of the incident this morning, following which their team visited the area to assess the damage. He said that relevant authorities have been requested to clean up the oil.
“We think some people spilled the oil on purpose. We are very saddened that people can do such irresponsible things,” he said.
Complaints have been filed by groups concerned about the environment to EPA, requesting it to clean up the oil.
