Elections Commission has advised people who are positive for COVID-19 or are in quarantine to take safety measures when they do to cast their ballots in the by-elections this weekend.

In addition to the Komandoo by-election, Elections Commission is also holding the by-elections for the women’s development committees in Th. Vilufushi and GA. Gemanafushi on Saturday, February 5.

Elections Commission announced on Tuesday that voting for registered voters who have tested positive for COVID-19 or under quarantine will be held from 03:00 pm to 04:00 pm.

Such voters have been urged to take safety measures in accordance with Health Protection Agency (HPA)’s guidelines when going to polling stations.

The Komandoo parliamentary seat was left vacant following the death of MP Hussain Waheed on December 14. He died at the age of 53 years in a hospital in Male’ City after a year-long battle with cancer.

Three political parties are contesting the Komandoo by-elections; MDP, PPM, and MNP. The government has launch a number of projects in the district ahead of the elections - a move which the opposition alleges is an attempt to influence the election.
