No-confidence motion against Home Minister withdrawn

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has withdrawn the no-confidence motion submitted to Parliament against Minister of Home Affairs Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed.

This has been confirmed by the Secretary General of the Parliament, who said that MDP withdrew the motion citing that they 'did not wish to submit it just now.'

The withdrawal comes with less than 24 hours left for MPs to vote on the motion. The voting was scheduled for tomorrow's Parliament sitting.

MDP Parliamentary Group President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that the decision to withdraw the motion was made at a meeting of the party's Parliamentary Group held today. He refused to comment further on the matter.

MDP submitted a no-confidence motion against Home Minister Dr Jameel earlier this month.

MDP said that it is the responsibility of the Home Minister to ensure safe streets in Male’, and that his failure to fulfil this responsibility has resulted in the increase in murders and other crimes in the society.

No MP at the 77-member Parliament, other than those representing MDP, has publicly supported the no-confidence motion against Dr Jameel.

The Parliament is made up of 29 MPs of MDP and 48 MPs of other parties.
