Indian papers have referred to a statement issued by the Indian High Commission yesterday, and said that the remarks by Abbas were against diplomatic protocol.

“We have told the government of Maldives that settling issues of huge mutual interest cannot be done on public space or on stage,” Mulay told the Indian paper.

Mulay also told the paper that in the event that arbitration fails, GMR and the government of Maldives should aim to find mutually accepted recourse by taking the matter to Court, or by finding other available mechanisms.

The paper further referred to the statement and said that President Waheed, during his visit to New Delhi shortly after he assumed the post of President, assured Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that all Indian investments in the Maldives will be protected and safeguarded.

The Indian High Commission also said in the statement that it had conveyed to the Maldivian government that India would safeguard the country’s interest, including those related to their investment.

Despite reports of this statement in Indian papers, the statement has neither been published on the website of the Indian High Commission in the Maldives, nor announced in the Maldives.

Abbas said in his speech at the protest held last Friday, that Mulay is a “traitor” and “an enemy of Maldives”.

The Maldivian government has disassociated itself from the remarks made by Abbas, saying that the remarks do not reflect the government's views.

Abbas's remarks have been condemned by Jumhooree Party, of which he is a member, and several other political parties in the Maldives.
