Male' City Council has expressed concern over Transport Authority's decision without discussion with the Council, to put stickers on vehicles that are parked illegally.
A statement issued by the City Council today states that a fine should only be imposed after facilitating ways in which people can avoid it.
They also stressed that, especially at a time when the country is undergoing a difficult financial period, people should be educated on ways in which a fine can be avoided before it is imposed.
City Council called on the authorities to strengthen the regulation that requires all four-wheeled vehicles to register a garage for parking, to cooperate with efforts to increase parking zones in Male', and to reconsider putting stickers on vehicles.
Transport Authority has decided to put stickers on illegally parked vehicles from today onwards. The first sticker carries a fine of MVR250, the second MVR500, and three stickers or more carry fines of MVR750 each. Taxi drivers have planned to hold a protest against this tomorrow.
