Police arrest 13 individuals in relation to drug cases

Drug Enforcement Unit of the Maldives Police Service has arrested 13 individuals in Malé, in a special operation conducted on the night of Wednesday last week.

The individuals were arrested in relation to some eight cases of drug trafficking and abuse.

The police said that nine women and a hundred and twenty people were searched in the operation, and that eight restaurants and three guesthouses were also searched. All the 13 people arrested are male, confirmed the police.

One of the arrested persons, of age 18, was stopped and searched on the road around 8:50 on Wednesday night, and the police found 14 wrapped pieces of rubber containing a substance suspected to be illegal drugs.

The same night, another man, also of 18 years of age, was arrested with one piece of wrapped rubber containing a substance suspected to be illegal drugs in the Alimas Carnival Compound. Four more were arrested with suspected drugs in Royal Park restaurant. Three of them are aged 25 years, while one is 19 years. Also, a man as caught with suspected drugs near the Gadi Buru, around 12:40 on Wednesday night. The police checked the room where he lives, and found suspected drugs, as well as another man with suspected substance.

The others arrested were suspected of having abused drugs or liquor.
