Maldivian Red Crescent (MRC) has conducted a health and legal camp for migrants in the Maldives in partnership with Mission for Migrant Workers Maldives (MMWM), Public Interest Law Centre (PILC), UNICEF Maldives, Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), Society for Health Education (SHE), Health Protection Agency (HPA), Welfare Association for Tamil Expatriates, Transparency Maldives, Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations in Maldives.
The event was held this evening at Hulhumale’ Ruhgandu area in conjunction with International Migrants Day.
At the camp, migrants were provided opportunities for free health screening, hygiene kits and given information on communicable diseases as well as free health care services available to migrants.
The health component of the camp was coordinated by MMWM in partnership with SHE, Cancer Society of Maldives, HPA and UNICEF Maldives.
Migrants were also educated on human rights and given legal advice.
The legal aid was provided by representatives from PILC, Transparency Maldives, and HRCM.
The camp’s hosting partner was HDC.
HDC said the company has always supported such camps which promotes racial equality as well as health and safety for all. They added that they are happy to have been a partner of this camp.
The Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the Welfare Association for Tamil Expatriates were also key partners in the event, whose involvement facilitated the increased engagement of the migrant community in the event.
