Police impede PPM’s motorcycle rally citing intentions to cause disturbances

Police have impeded a planned motorcycle rally for this evening at Male’ City by the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) – based on information received of intentions to cause disturbances.  

In a statement released by the Police today – they said that such disturbances pose threats to a large number of people. Therefore, they said they will not give the chance to hold the motorcycle rally in a manner that threatens public order and security.

“As Maldives Police Service is mandated by the law to ensure public order as well as to provide security for all people, including those taking part in such rallies – we will not be giving the chance to hold the motorcycle rally in a manner that threatens public order and security,” the statement read.

PPM’s motorcycle rally falls under their ‘India Out’ campaign. To further promote the campaign, PPM’s leader, former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom departed to the atolls on Thursday.
