The Civil Society Coalition has said that 10,000 people have signed the petition against GMR, the Indian company operating Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA).
The petition will be presented to President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik.
Adhaalath Party President Sheikh Imran Abdullah said that over 10,000 forms have been sent to atolls as well.
Urging more members of the public to sign the petition, Imran informed that files have been prepared for Members of Parliament, Airport employees and political party leaders to sign it as well.
He said that several Members of Parliament, Atoll Council members and Island Council members have already signed the petition.
Imran said that activities will be held tonight and for the next three days, to encourage GMR to leave.
Vice President of Civil Society Coalition and Minister of State for Home Affairs, Abdullah Mohamed said that the activities are not against GMR; rather, the purpose is to facilitate Maldivians to reclaim their own airport.
He was confident that the airport can be reclaimed.
Special activities are planned for 9 November, themed “Maldivians’ Airport for Maldivians”.
