Over MVR 1 billion in Green Fund at the end of August

Records released by the Finance Ministry show the balance in Green Fund, as of the end of August, to be MVR 1.06 billion.

As per the Ministry’s latest records – MVR 75.6 million was collected as Green Tax during the month of August.

The top three atolls contributing to Green Tax in August are:

  1. Contributing the highest, as usual, is Male’ Atoll – recording a total of MVR 29.6 million
  2. Alifu Dhaalu Atoll contributing MVR 10.6 billion
  3. Raa Atoll contributing MVR 6.5 million

Whilst over MVR 1 billion have been recorded in Green Fund in August – the first time the balance in Green Fund had crossed over MVR 1 billion was back in this year’s June.

The Green Fund is utilized to finance environmental protection projects and sustainable development projects such as water and sanitation projects, coastal protection projects, and waste management projects.

The three projects which the most amount of money was spent on from the Green Fun in August:

  1. MVR 4.6 million spent on environment protection and waste management project in Greater Male’ Area
  2. MVR 1.1 million spent on water and sanitation project at HDh. Kurinbi
  3. NVR 3.9 million spent on water and sanitation project at GA. Nilandhoo

The government began charging USD 6 per tourist per night from resorts in 2015 – and at the rate of USD 3 per tourist per night from guesthouses in 2016.
