Parliament to monitor the cases of inmates placed in indefinite detention

The Parliament has passed to monitor the cases of all inmates currently placed under "indefinite detention" – or jailed pending outcome of trial – until the end of their trial.

The motion calling for urgent action to take measures to provide inmates facing indefinite detentions better access to medical care was put forward by Fonadhoo MP Moosa Siraj on Tuesday.

Debating regarding the motion at the parliamentary session held following this – Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim had proposed that the Parliament monitors inmates placed in indefinite detentions.

“A committee from the Majilis monitoring them – in a manner that this is arranged soon to monitor the ongoing cases of this 370 people until the case is concluded,” he had said.

MP Azim’s recommendation to monitor inmates through a Parliament’s committee – was seconded by South Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef.

A vote was amongst the parliamentarians to decide whether to support MP Azim’s proposal or not. With 43 members out of the 44 voting in favor of it. No member voted against the proposal.

Upon the proposal being passed – the work will be undertaken by Parliament’s Judiciary Committee.
