International organisation which works for the protection of the environment, Greenpeace, has commenced efforts in the Maldives to promote sustainable fisheries.
Speaking at a press conference today, a senior official of Greenpeace said that collaborative efforts are ongoing with Maldives Coast Guard, to promote sustainable fisheries in the Maldives.
He said that Greenpeace will carry out research on fisheries in the Maldives and hold discussions with political groups.
He said that the Indian Ocean is the second largest provider of fish in the world, and that the biggest threat to fisheries is net fishing. He praised the Maldives for its line fishing.
Greenpeace vessel Rainbow Warrior, which will be used in the research activities, arrived in the Maldives on 27 October. It has already commenced research in the southern atolls, and a special function will be held on the vessel on 5 November.
