Shazail beats Shimaz to get elected MRM’s deputy president

Maldive Gas’ Managing Director Shazail Shiyam has beaten Deputy Transport Minister Shimaz Ali to get elected as deputy president of Maldives Reform Movement (MRM). 

MRM held its first national convention to elect officials to leadership positions this Saturday. 

The most competitive had been the race for deputy president of MRM. Shazail, who won the election, received 62 votes, while his rival Shimaz received 44 votes. 

Aminath Nadhira had been the sole contender for the seat of female deputy president, and was automatically elected. 

Meanwhile, MRM’s founder, former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom had run unopposed for the position of leader, and his son, former Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon had run unopposed for the position of president. Both were automatically elected. 

MRM also elected members to its executive committee, youth council, women’s council, election committee, disciplinary committee and appeals committee.
