The Police have made an arrest in connection to the violent assault which took place at Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) office yesterday.

In this regard, they confirmed the identity of the individual arrested as a 39-year-old man. It was also noted that the Police are investigating the case further.

The victims of the assault have been identified as Mariyam Zubair (Mandhy), a long-time employee at the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) office and mother of South Galolhu MP Mickail Ahmed Naseem – and one additional person.

The attacker was allegedly intoxicated – and had nothing to politics. MP Mickail described the assault as “an indiscriminate attack on many people in the office by an intoxicated person”.

While an arrest has been made – via a tweet last night, Mandhy had expressed she wished the attacker not be punished – but rather give the medical attention required for rehabilitation.

However, MDP had strongly condemned the attack in a statement issued last night – also calling that the attacker be punished accordingly. They also added that MDP has ‘zero tolerance’ with respect to violence within the party.
