President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed Uza. Mariyam Shamma Ismail to the post of Consumer Ombudsman in accordance with Article 70 of the Consumer Protection Act.
Shamma was presented with her letter of appointment last Tuesday.
Shamma attained her Advanced Diploma in Law from HELP University, Malaysia, and her Bachelor of Laws from the University of the West of England Bristol, England, in 2004.
She has over 14 years of experience in the legal profession and public sector.
She most recently served as a Legal Consultant at the Economic Ministry, and had earlier filled the post of Director of Legal and Policy Affairs at the Human Rights Commission of Maldives. She also previously served as the Registrar of the Supreme Court, from November 2008 until December 2017.
The Consumer Protection Act delineates the rights of consumers when purchasing goods and services, and the measures to be taken to protect these rights.
The Consumer Ombudsman mandated under this Act is tasked with ensuring businesses’ adherence to its provisions and enforcing compensation to consumers when necessary.
