President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that exchange of intelligence is extremely important at a time where the world is facing many challenges in the form of terrorism and extremism both regionally and internationally.

He had made this remark while speaking at the Oath Taking and Arms Presentation ceremony held for the graduates of the 67th Basic Training Course of the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), last night.

Speaking further on the point, President Solih noted that a system for exchange of terrorism-related intelligence between intelligence agencies in the Maldives, as required under the Counter-Terrorism Act, had been established  August 17 – whereas intelligence agencies have begun sharing information under the new system.

President Solih also added that the relevant authorities are working on further strengthening the system of exchange – and upon achieving this national security forces would be able to assess terrorism-related threats much more efficiently, thus raising the competence of national security forces in tackling these threats.

“This is a time where the world is facing many challenges, regionally and internationally, in the form of terrorism and extremism. It is the responsibility of the armed forces to protect the legal administration from any threats or harm that may occur to disrupt the system,”

“The highest objective of every MNDF official should be none other than to protect our nation and the faith of Islam,” he had said.

President Solih also advised MNDF officials to carry out their duties in line with the best conduct stipulated in the Maldivian Consitution and the Armed Forced Act – and also stressed the importance of remaining politically impartial while serving the nation.

He also described the most fundamental characteristics of a good MND official as vigilance, to treat civilians without prejudice, being genuine and courteous, and to avoid adverse parts of society, as well as to be an example to the people.

He also added that that the service of the armed forces is not just a job but a sacrifice made in the name of the country.
