Electricity and water services have been interrupted to a large part of Fuvahmulah, a populous city located in southern Maldives.
Approximately 80 percent of the city has been without electricity or water since early Monday morning.
Fuvahmulah City Mayor Ismail Rafeeq told Sun the electricity and water outage took place due to an issue with the city’s main transformer.
Ismail said a transformer is being brought in from Addu City to resolve the issue.
He said that electricity is expected to be restored tonight or tomorrow at the earliest, but authorities are working on restoring water sooner.
Ismail added that electricity and water will be resorted earlier than expected if authorities are able to fix the issue which arose with the city’s main transformer.
“We apologize to the people. We will work to solve the water outage as soon as possible. We apologize sincerely for the inconvenience,” he said.
Fenaka Corporation confirms the company is working on bringing in a transformer from Addu, and said they estimate it will take 10-12 hours to resolve the issue.
