MDP parliamentary group leader, Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim has stated that when the Parliament resumes its session, their priority will be to work on countering religious extremism.

In this regard, speaking to Sun today, Azim noted that currently effort was being put to collect signatures of parliamentarians in order to convene a meeting out of session – to kick-start work against religious extremism. However, he added that they facing difficulties in convening a meeting subsequent to many parliamentarians being out of town at the moment.

“A large number of the parliament members have either gone abroad or to their constituency for this holiday. Thus, it is difficult to say straight away when a meeting can be convened,” Azim had said.

No specific plans have yet been outlined by MDP on how the work on countering religious extremism will be carried forward.

In order to combat religious extremism, the Parliament has brought major amendments to the Anti-terrorism Act including bringing easements to burden of proof.
