Youths residing in N. Velidhoo lead an initiative today where environmentally friendly bags were distributed to each house on the island.
Ahmed Ameel, one of the leaders of the initiative told Sun that the bags were distributed as an Eid al-Adha gift.
“We estimate that around 400 bags have been distributed. Each house was given one bag,” he had said.
He highlighted that the main goal of this initiative is to pave the way to reduce the use of plastic bags within the island.
Ameel further noted that the youths of Velidhoo have plans to conduct such activities in the future as well. He also noted that they were working on creating awareness amongst the residents of the island on environmental friendliness.
“Us youths have always been working to reduce the negative impacts on the environment throughout our island,” he added.
The youths encourage all residents to make use of the cloth bags gifted today – and advises against the use of plastic bags. Additionally, they also encourage residents to stray away from acts that may harm the environment and work together as a community to ensure environmental protection.
