North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi) has been appointed to the Parliament’s Security Services Committee (241 Committee), replacing fellow MDP member, South Henveiru MP Hussain Shaheem (Andhun Hussain).

The change to the Security Services Committee was announced at the parliamentary sitting on Tuesday morning. With the change, the current members of the committee are:

  2. West Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef, deputy chair
  3. Hulhumale’ MP Ali Niyaz
  4. North Galolhu MP Eva Abdulla
  5. Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Gafoor Moosa
  6. Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef

The changes come as the committee conducts an inquiry into the breach of Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed’s security in relation to the May 6 terror attack.

MDP parliamentarians loyal to Nasheed have accused the government of interfering in the inquiry, a claim denied by committee chair, Aslam in a press conference last Monday.

The scope of the inquiry:

  • Establishing whether security services or any other state institution received prior intelligence of the attack
  • Identifying the established standards for protection and security by security services
  • Identifying the standard protocol for providing safety and security to Nasheed
  • Identifying the standard protocol for collecting and responding to financial intelligence
  • Assessing adherence to legal framework

Those questioned in the inquiry include heads of Maldives National Defense Force and Maldives Police Service, Planning Minister Mohamed Aslam, and former Male’ City Mayor Shifa Mohamed.
