Maldives’ COVID-19 death toll rises to 186

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced a COVID-19 patient admitted to Hulhumale’ Medical Facility has passed away.

HPA identified the deceased as an 86-year-old Maldivian male.

He passed away at 12:19 am this Monday.

“This is the 186th COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” said HPA, announcing the fatality.

Maldives has been experiencing a surge in both infection rate and fatalities in recent weeks. While infection rates have been significantly reduced with the implementation of new restrictive measures, fatalities continue to rise.

Last May saw the highest number of COVID-19 fatalities in a single month, with 88 deaths. This June has been 24 deaths.

Maldives has 67,950 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 412 new cases recorded on Sunday. 48,086 patients have since recovered.

The country currently has 19,670 active cases. 166 of the patients are hospitalized.
