100-year-old becomes Maldives’ oldest COVID-19 victim

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced a COVID-19 patient admitted to Dharumavantha Hospital has passed away.

HPA identified the deceased as a 100-year-old Maldivian male.

He was being treated on the 11th floor of Dharumavantha Hospital, and passed away at 09:33 am this Monday.

“This is the 187th COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” said HPA, announcing the fatality.

He is the oldest confirmed COVID-19 death in Maldives.

It is also the second COVID-19 fatality this Monday, following the death of a 86-year-old Maldivian male admitted to Hulhumale’ Medical Facility at 12:19 am.

Maldives has been experiencing a surge in both infection rate and fatalities in recent weeks. While infection rates have been significantly reduced with the implementation of new restrictive measures, fatalities continue to rise.

Last May saw the highest number of COVID-19 fatalities in a single month, with 88 deaths. This June has been 25 deaths.

Maldives has 67,950 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 412 new cases recorded on Sunday. 48,086 patients have since recovered.

The country currently has 19,670 active cases. 166 of the patients are hospitalized.
