Maldives’ COVID-19 death toll rises to 125

Funeral prayers held for a COVID-19 patient.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced on Sunday that a patient admitted to Hulhumale’ Medical Facility has passed away.

HPA identified the deceased as a 62-year-old Maldivian female.

She was declared dead at 10:49 am.

“This is the 125th COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” announced HPA.

Her death also marks the second COVID-19 death this Sunday. Both fatalities were patients admitted to Hulhumale' Medical Facility.

Maldives has been experiencing a surge in both infection rate and fatalities in recent weeks.

This May has seen the highest number of COVID-19 fatalities in Maldives, with 52 deaths.

Maldives has 54,365 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 1,960 new cases recorded on Saturday. 31,812 patients have since recovered.

The country currently has 22,421 active cases. 294 of the patients are hospitalized.

With the surge in positive cases and their contacts, health authorities have abandoned tracing all contacts and decided to limit contact tracing in the greater Male’ area to high-risk contacts.
