Speaker Nasheed says he’ll rejoin work ‘in no time’ as Parliament reconvenes for new session

Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is in a military hospital in Germany recovering from injuries he sustained in a terror attack earlier this May, said on Monday that he will rejoin work in no time, as the Parliament reconvened for the second session of the year.

A homemade remote-controlled IED was strapped to motorcycle parked nearby Nasheed’s residence, and was detonated at 08:27 pm on May 6, just as Nasheed, 53, exited his residence and went to get in his car. Nasheed was thrown to the ground and sustained multiple shrapnel wounds, while three members of his security detail and two bystanders sustained minor wounds.

He was rushed to ADK Hospital, where he underwent multiple lifesaving surgeries.

He was airlifted to a military hospital in Germany last week to continue his rehabilitation and recovery.

In a special message read during the first sitting of the second session of the year on Monday morning, Nasheed noted that the second session comes at the heels of a deadly attack to assassinate him.  

“I have no doubt you, honorable parliamentarians, will work hard and undeterred to fulfill the responsibilities of the People’s Majlis even under such dangerous and fearful circumstances,” he said.

Nasheed said he is certain parliamentarians will put national interests first, work for the safety and benefit of the Maldivian people.

“By the will of Allah, I will rejoin you, honorable parliamentarians in the work of the Majlis in no time. I will meet with the beloved people of Maldives,” he said.

Nasheed said he will continue to fulfill his responsibilities in accordance with the will of the people.

The police are treating the May 6 blast as a targeted terror attack to assassinate Nasheed. They have made three arrests in connection to the case: Ahmed Adhuham Rasheed, 26, Hiyaa, GDh. Thinadhoo; Mujaz Ahmed, 21, Ma. Feyruge, K. Male’; and Thahmeen Ahmed, 32, Folheyma, GA. Kondey. Adhuham is believed to be the man who detonated the IED.
