Transport Authority has decided that vehicles will be banned in Male’ for specified hours on Eid ul-Adha, which falls this year on Friday, 26 October.
Chairman of Transport Authority, Abdul Rasheed Nafiz told Sun Online that vehicles will be banned on Friday from 4:00pm to 10:00pm.
Only permitted vehicles will be allowed on the streets during these hours, which include security vehicles, health service vehicles and special vehicles for the disabled.
Male’ City Council Member Mohamed Abdul Kareem said today that it is important to ban vehicles on Eid, in order to make the day more enjoyable for families.
He said that Transport Ministry had granted permission to make Eid a vehicle-free day.
Police have also said that action will be taken against anyone who uses vehicles during the specified hours on Eid.
Earlier this year, City Council decided to ban vehicles also on Eid ul-Fitr; however, this decision was revoked by Transport Authority, which said that City Council made the decision without prior discussion with the Authority.
