Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) – the main ruling party – said on Thursday that the explosion outside the residence of the party’s leader – Parliament Speaker and Former President Mohamed Nasheed was an attempt on his life.
In an interview to RaajjeTV, MDP chairperson, West Henveiru MP Hussain Latheef said MDP believes the explosion to be deliberate.
“Our party believes this was a terrorist attack to assassinate Speaker Nasheed,” he said.
MDP has issued a press statement in which they said the explosion had been a targeted attack, and condemning the attack in the harshest terms.
“This party calls for an immediate investigation into this dangerous terrorist attack and for action against all involved,” said MDP in their statement.
The explosion took place outside Nasheed’s residence – G. Canaryge – located in the Galolhu district of Male’ City – on Thursday night, just as he entered his car. Nasheed, three members of his security detail and two bystanders, sustained injuries in the explosion.
The extent of his injuries are unclear at this point.
