Tornado hits Kendhikulhudhoo, damages two houses

A tornado has hit the island of Kendhikulhudhoo in Noonu Atoll, and causes serious damage and destruction to two residential houses.

Ibrahim Zameer, President of Kendhikulhudhoo Island Council spoke to sun today, and said that the island had been experiencing bad weather and that the tornado hit the island today morning, around 8:50 am.

He said that two residential houses, Shabaab and Raasta, were the targets of the tornado. He said that the roofs of those houses were thrown away, while not a single tree remains in the compound any of these residential houses.

However, Zameer also confirmed that the incident did not cause any injury to a person.

“One of the two houses is already occupied, and while there were extensive damage to the roof, and household equipment in the place, no one suffered any injuries. The other house is being made ready for occupation. The roofs were, according to eye-witnesses, lifted into the air and thrown about 200 feet away”, said Zameer.

The two houses are adjacent to each other. Zameer said that the people of the island are working voluntarily to repair the two houses.

Zameer said that a tornado hit the island last year too causing considerable damage, and that the Council had requested the government to provide some assistance to those who suffered damage last time. He said that the government has not responded the request.

Tornados are not a frequent happening in the Maldives, and rarely is there case of one hitting an inhabited island and causing damage of this sort.
