Ex-President Yameen moved to house arrest

Former President of the Maldives Abdulla Yameen has been moved to house arrest. The ex-President was moved to house arrest tonight. 

Yameen was moved to house arrest from Maafushi Prison where he had been serving a five-year prison sentence after being found guilty of money laundering in 2018. His move to house arrest comes after cases of COVID-19 were detected from the Maafushi Prison where he had been serving his sentence. 

His supporters and political party PPM and its coalition partner party PNC have called to move Yameen to house arrest on several occasions, and this time stated that moving the ex-President to house arrest was the safest way right now.

Maldives Corrections Services also attributed the move to house arrest due to the positive cases confirmed from the Maafushi Prison.

"The ex-president Abdulla Yameen who was serving his sentence has been moved to house arrest temporarily," a Corrections media official stated. 

Sun has also managed to confirm through sources, that the leader of the governing party MDP, former President and current Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed expressed his approval to move Yameen to house arrest to his close friend and political ally, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, during the breakfast today.

Yameen's successor, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih himself had stated just a day before the holy month of Ramadan that ex-President Yameen would not face any hardships and that discussions were underway to move him to house arrest.

Yameen's political party and his family have all made requests previously to move him to house arrest on the basis of ill-health. 

Yameen was imprisoned for money laundering in relation to Ga. Vodamulla, one of the islands included in the massive MMPRC scandal. 

After Yameen's relocation to his home, no one convicted under the charges related to the scandal is currently serving their sentences in prison. Ex-President Ahmed Adeeb, who is alleged to have orchestrated the entire scandal is on house arrest, while ex-MMPRC head Abdulla Ziyath is also under house arrest.
