Pediatrician Ahmed Faisal said on Saturday that three infants born to three COVID-19 patients are being treated on ventilators.

In a tweet on Saturday evening, Faisal said that though the infants themselves tested negative for COVID-19, they need to be kept isolated and treated in separate cubicles as they are contacts.

Faisal warned that the COVID-19 situation in Maldives is bad, with a shortage of nurses and medical equipment and resources.

“Insufficient number of nurses, machine, resources; the situation is bad,” he said.

Maldives is facing a surge in COVID-19 cases, especially in several residential islands outside of the greater Male’ region.

Maldives has 27,403 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 218 new cases on Saturday. 24,234 people have since recovered, while 71 have died from complications. The country currently has 3,307 active cases. 101 of the patients are hospitalized.
