Multiple COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in AA. Mathiveri, prompting health authorities to place the island under monitoring.
An order signed by Director General of Public Health Maimoona Aboobakr has been sent to Mathiveri Council informing of the decision to place the island under monitoring, as authorities conduct health invetsigations.
With the decision, travel in and out of Mathiveri has been temporarily suspended until the Health Protection Agency (HPA) decides otherwise.
Mathiveri Health Center reports they have tested 15 people exhibiting flu symptoms. The results on 10 of them came back positive for COVID-19.
The source of the infection remains unclear at this point.
Mathiveri is home to multiple guesthouses, many of which are currently operating at full occupancy.
Mathiveri Health Center said the COVID-19 cases haven’t been linked to any of the tourists staying at the island’s guesthouses.
“There aren’t any guesthouse employees among those who tested positive. Most of them are senior citizens. We conducted a recent testing at guesthouses. None of them tested positive,” said the Mathiveri Health Center.
Maldives has 26,667confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 162 new cases on Tuesday. 23,803 people have since recovered, while 71 have died from complications. The country currently has 2,784 active cases.
