Former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has received his first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

Maldives Correctional Service’s spokesperson Yusreen Ahmed confirms Yameen received his first dose on Monday night.

Yusreen said Yameen has been transported back to Maafushi Prison after getting vaccinated.

Sun has been informed Yameen received the Pfizer vaccine - available only to select groups via appointment - from ADK Hospital.

Yameen had originally been scheduled to receive his first dose last week. He was transported to Male’ City, and then transported back to Maafushi Prison without getting vaccinated. Maldives Correctional Service said the former President refused to get vaccinated, while his lawyers said that he did not refuse to get vaccinated, but was transported back to Maafushi Prison after being made to wait for hours in a speedboat in the harbor because Maldives Correctional Service failed to make necessary arrangements.
