The Department of National Planning has revealed that the inflation rate of Male’ increased to 14.77 percent between September 2011 and September 2012.
Excluding fish, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) shows that the annualized inflation in September 2012 was at 11.26 percent.
Inflation was highest in April 2012, when it reached 15.05 percent.
When September 2012 is compared to September 2011, the CPI increased by 10.11 percent.
However, monthly CPI of September 2012 decreased by 0.06 percent compared to August 2012.
Inflation in August 2012 was 15.04 percent, from 14.94 percent in July 2012.
Over the past 12 months, Tobacco and fish showed the highest inflation followed by hotels, cafes and restaurants, and clothing and footwear.
Tobacco showed the highest inflation at 73 percent followed by fish at 65 percent. The third highest category was hotels, cafes and restaurants which registered 31 percent. Fourth highest was clothing and footwear, at 25 percent.
Between the annual periods of October 2010 to September 2011 and October 2011 to September 2012, the price of skipjack tuna increased by 97.64 percent, the price of other tuna (latti) increased by 140.82 percent, the price of smoked fish increased by 43.15 percent, and the price of Felivaru canned fish in oil 185g increased by 9.99 percent.
Over the same period, the price of breakfast at hotels, cafes and restaurants increased by 33.11 percent, the price of pizzas increased by 24.21 percent, and the price of general restaurant meals increased by 24.53 percent.
While tobacco prices increased by 73 percent, the price of cigarettes increased by 72 percent and the price of arecanut increased by 67 percent.
