Change of name for some schools in Addu City

Two schools in Addu City have received new names.

Muhibbudeen School and S. Atoll Learning Centre were changed to Sharafuddeen School. After the change of name these two schools have been merged to become one. In addition, they will now have classes from grade one to ten.

Abdulla Sodiq (Soabe), Mayor of Addu City said today that with Addu becoming a city, the names of the schools were changed after a discussion between Addu’s Education Unit and School Boards.

“The names of Feydhu School and Hithadhu School will also change in the near future. These discussions are currently ongoing,” Soabe said.

He said that Hithadhu School will change to Addu English School. He is not yet informed of the new name for Feydhu School.

Soabe said that along with the name changes, it has also been decided by the City Council to merge several schools. As a result of this, Addu City’s Hulhudhu school and Shamsuddeen School and Atoll School will become one school before 2013.

“It has so far been decided to merge these three schools to become one, and name it Bahaauddeen School,” continued Soabe.

He said that because some schools of Addu City have too few pupils, they are working on creating bigger schools with more facilities and better education programs, before 2013.

Anticipating the costs involved for parents due to the change of names, the parents have been allowed a time-frame of one year to change the children’s uniforms and badges.

“The kids can continue using their old uniforms and sports uniforms this year, even though the names have been changed,” he said.
