Vaani population to be relocated at Kudahuvadhoo

The government has decided to declare Vaani in Dhaalu Atoll as an uninhabited island and relocate her population at Kudahuvadhoo, the Central Island of Dhaalu Atoll.

Most of the people belonging to the small island of Vaani are already living in Kudahuvadhoo.

Speaking to Sun, Ibrahim Fikuree, President of Kudahuvadhoo Island Council, said that all the administrative work and other tasks to be carried out in order to relocate Vaani population at Kudahuvadhoo were underway. He also said that the whole process would be complete, and all the people currently residing in Vaani moved to Kudahuvadhoo, within the week ahead.

When the deadly Tsunami happened in 2004, Vaani, then having a population of some 470 people, was one of the most seriously hit islands in the country. Many people lost their homes and their property and were left with nothing. Most of those people moved to Kudahuvadhoo to start their lives anew.

As of present, only 17 people live in Vaani.
