Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that the system of governance in the Maldives cannot be changed just by discussions held between two people.

His comments come after Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed said that discussions will be held with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih regarding the system of governance in the nation and that a positive outcome could come from it.

Nasheed was speaking in the “Ask Speaker” program held last night and was responding to a question by a caller.

Maumoon in a tweet said that discussions between two people cannot change the system of governance in the Maldives.

Currently, the Maldives has a presidential system of governance decided by a 2008 referendum. However, Nasheed is a stern critic of this and maintains that the country is best suited for a parliamentary system.
