No additional money can be provided to Maldives, said World Bank Manager: Siyam

Meedho MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed has said that the Manager of World Bank to the Maldives had said that it is not possible to provide additional money to the Maldives.

While speaking at the Parliament on the revisions proposed to the Decentralisation Act, Siyam said that he met with the Manager of World Bank to Maldives yesterday, who mentioned that no additional money or investment can be provided to Maldives due to the political unrest and dangers faced by the citizens of Maldives.

“The reason given by him is that Maldivian citizens are being forced to cope with political unrest and danger. He said that Maldivians are in dismay, and that investors are apprehensive about investing in Maldives,” said Siyam.

Siyam said that focus should be put on foreigners’ view of the Maldives, rather than the internal issues faced by the country. He urged MPs to put aside political interests and work for the nation.

“I am calling on you, the 77 members of parliament, to love your nation; to work without hesitation to uphold the country’s reputation. We should put aside the interest of political parties, and prioritise the interest of the nation,” he said.

He said that new faces need to be introduced to the political scene of the Maldives.

“We don’t want the people who have failed, to continue saying that they can act as the President of Maldives,” Siyam said.
