Police Commissioner summoned to 241 Committee again

Police Commissioner Abdullah Riyaz has been summoned to the Committee on Security Services of the People’s Majlis for a second time.

Commissioner Riyaz is being summoned to the Committee, which has been known better as the 241 Committee in order to question him about the extent of threat of attacks against MPs, in the wake of the brutal murder of MP Dr. Afrasheem Ali.

Today’s session of the 241 Committee with the Commissioner of Police was conducted behind closed doors.

Commissioner Riyaz was summoned to the meeting of 241 Committee held last night as well, though he had informed via a letter that he was unable to attend the meeting.

A member of the Committee told that Riyaz’s letter last night said that he could not attend the meeting due to the “situation in Malé at the moment”. However, the member confirmed that Riyaz would be attending today’s meeting.

While the Police Commissioner is being summoned by 241 Committee, in the first meeting of the Committee following the murder of MP Dr. Afrasheem Ali, members had questioned the efficiency and effectiveness of security granted to MPs by the Maldives Police Service. Riyaz Rasheed, a member sitting in the 241 Committee, had said that the police security personnel had not been able to provide sufficient security in cases where MPs were threatened with physical attacks.
