Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has recused himself from the corruption case against Male’ City mayor Shifa Mohamed.

Mayor Shifa is alleged of corruption regarding toilets constructed in a public park of Male’ City. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) which investigated the case has now forwarded the case to the PG Office for charges to be brought forward.

In a press conference yesterday, PG Hussain Shameem said that there was a conflict of interest if he was involved in the case due to the family relations between him and Mayor Shifa. Shameem even refused to respond to a question by a journalist in relation to the case.

“I cannot say anything in the case of Shifa. Shifa is a cousin of mine. So, I dare not say. I have not looked into that file nor have I seen it. I have recused myself from it.” Said PG Shameem.

The PG Office is yet to make a decision on the case despite the ACC forwarding the case to the PG Office on September 29. PG Shameem said that he would make arrangements for his office to respond to the case without his involvement.
