Parliament calls for revision, enhancement of Paris Accord commitments

Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem.

The parliament has called on the government to review the contribution by the Maldives for the Paris Agreement and formulate better goals for the convention.

The agreement is a landmark environmental accord that was adopted by nearly every nation in 2015 to address climate change and its negative impacts. The agreement includes commitments from all major emitting countries to cut their climate-altering pollution and to strengthen those commitments over time.

An issue by Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem to the parliament today read that revision of the commitments for sourcing expenditure and funds economically in a convenient, cost-effective, and environment-friendly way was needed.

The issue also read that the nationally determined contributions needed to be revised for the swift transition to renewable energy and for the Maldives to travel on the path for low carbon energy. A rapid plan for this purpose and the required efforts by the state for this also needed to be quickened.

MP Saleem’s issue was passed with the vote of 48 MPs.
