Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has informed former President Mohamed Nasheed that it will not take responsibility for any harm caused to him while security is withdrawn.
Nasheed had requested that security be withdrawn during his current trip to the south of Maldives.
A statement issued by MNDF states that MNDF has been providing security and protection to former Presidents as required by the law on privileges to former Presidents.
MNDF has urged all stakeholders to refrain from any activity that might obstruct the institution from carrying out its responsibilities, and to cooperate with MNDF in its efforts.
MNDF has said that following Nasheed’s request, Defence Ministry has informed Nasheed in a letter that the request to withdraw security should be made in writing, and that MNDF will not be responsible for any harm caused to Nasheed while security is withdrawn.
The Defence Ministry has also requested the Parliament to make a decision on how MNDF should act in such situations.
