The Police have informed that no security was provided to Ungoofaaru MP Dr Afrasheem Ali on the night of his murder because he had requested that security for him be withdrawn until the Parliament reconvened, at which time he would ask for security to be resumed.
Speaking to reporters at Shaheed Hussain Adam Building today, Deputy Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed said that Afrasheem had said that some people were giving him trouble and requested for security on 5 September; however, between 5 and 21 September, he had used security only on two occasions.
“He did not give any details of what he meant by a group giving him trouble. We assumed that it was due to some statements made on TV and other media,” he said.
Hussain Waheed said that when asked by Police Special Protection why he was not using security, Afrasheem had replied that he was ‘cool, free and content’.
Afrasheem had said that he will only need security when the Parliament resumes, and that he would let the Police know when he needs it again.
Hussain Waheed said that that was when security for Afrasheem was disrupted, and that he never requested for it again.
