The government of Maldives has distributed MVR 35.1 million to 8,488 individuals in total as income support.

The government began to provide an income support allowance after many in the country faced negative impacts to their incomes due to COVID-19. Cases of employees being subjected to wage reductions, no pay leaves, and even dismissals have been reported since COVID-19 hit the economy of the nation.

MVR 5,000 is provided per individual who currently receives no income or an income below the figure. The funds are distributed through the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA).

Under the policy for income support, payments are provided on a monthly basis for the months of April, May, and June. The payments were started on May 20.w
