COVID-19: 71-year old individual passes away

Health Protection Agency has just announced the death of a 71-year old local due to COVID-19.

In a tweet, HPA said that the individual was a female who had attended the Emergency Room of IGMH in the morning. The woman was suffering from breathing difficulties when she attended the ER.

The time of death was recorded as 13:38. This is the 16th death in relation to COVID-19 in the Maldives. HPA has not yet clarified when the woman tested positive for the virus but stated that it was indeed a COVID-19 related death.

According to HPA statistics, Maldives currently has 3,567 total cases of the virus. A total of 61 cases were identified yesterday. COVID-19 cases have been on the rise since the country eased its lockdown measures on July 1. 

The Maldives currently has 983 active cases. 464 people have tested positive over the past one-week period.

The Maldives identified its first coronavirus case on March 7 and declared a state of public health emergency over the pandemic less than a week later on March 12.
