Four Parliament Committees to study CNI report

The report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) has been sent to four Parliament Committees for assessment.

Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid said today at the first sitting of the final session of this year of the Parliament, that the report has been sent to Independent Institutions Committee, National Security Committee, Security Services (241) Committee and Government Accountability Committee.

“The CNI sent its report to me; and it was sent to you, honourable members, on the same day... I am confident that the Committees which have received the report will do the necessary work,” he said.

Out of the Committees to which the report has been sent, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) holds majority in the Government Accountability Committee.

MDP has been demanding the implementation of three recommendations mentioned in the report; namely, reform of judiciary, reform of Parliament and investigation of illegal activities carried out by security forces on 6, 7 and 8 February.

Shahid stressed that the Parliament and its Committees must expedite their work. He thanked the Chairpersons of the Committees who had held Committee meetings while the Parliament had been disrupted.

Shahid also highlighted the services of Meynaa Kaleyfaan Dhonmanik, N. Holhudhoo, who recently passed away, as a Member of Parliament. Meynaa Kaleyfaan Dhonmanik represented Noonu atoll at the eighth Parliament of the Maldives.
