MP for South Mahchangoalhi Ahmed Haitham has called to designate victim-blaming as a criminal offense.
The MP issued a statement regarding the sexual and child abuse cases being reported all over the country as of recently.
He said that the issues were not being resolved and were increasing day by day.
Other than designating sexual abuse and child abuse as a major crime, the MP called for victim-blaming to be designated as a punitive crime. He said that he saw the need for protecting the integrity and rights of the victims.
“They should not be subjected to sexual abuse, harassment, or rape due to the environment they visit or their attire.” said the MP.
Victim blaming encouraged criminals to keep on committing the crime, according to the MPs statement.
“This is unacceptable in a developing country. We should all feel sorrow towards the victim instead. The offender should be criminalized and punished justly.” said the MP.
Repeated instances of negligence identified from the relevant institutions had led to the corrosion of public trust in institutions by the public, said the MP.
The MP called on institutions to do more to pursue these matters, speed up investigations and hand out harsh punishments for crimes of the nature that went against humanity.
