Health authorities have begun testing prison officers and inmates for COVID-19.

The testing comes shortly after an employee of Maldives Correctional Services tested positive for COVID-19. An ESG officer working in Male' Prison had tested positive yesterday.

Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu said safety measures were being taken in prisons as testing commenced.

Authorities have also conducted random sampling in prisons previously. All the test results had returned as negative.

The Maldives has so far tested 2,187 people as positive for the virus. A total of 1,788 individuals have also made recoveries from the virus.
